Faculty Ballet John Gardner, Artistic Director
Mr. Gardner, a native Portlander, was trained by Jacqueline Schumacher and Nikolas Vasiliev of the Portland Ballet. He was taken into the San Francisco Ballet School on a Ford Foundation Scholarship. He danced with American Ballet Theatre, Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Hamburg State Ballet in Germany. Mr. Gardner has taught at the University of Texas, University of Oregon, and University of Illinois. He returned to Portland in 1982 and founded the Oregon Festival Ballet, later called Pacific Festival Ballet, and Portland Dance Academy in 1982. His students have gone on to careers with the Oakland Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, OBT, Atlanta Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. His students are regularly accepted for Summer Intensives at all the major professional schools, including SAB, ABT, The Royal Ballet School UK, SFB, PNB, Kirov Academy, Joffrey and SDL. Two of his students were recently accepted to The Juilliard School at Lincoln Center, New York City. Lisa Sundstrom Ms. Sundstrom was born and raised in Astoria where she was awarded a full-scholarship by Maria Vegh to attend the Marin Ballet School. She was hand-picked by Mikhail Baryshnikov to become one of 10 students in his new school at ABT. Ms. Sundstrom was given a full contract with the company the following year at age 17. After dancing in ABT, she was asked by Robert Weiss to become a principal at Pennsylvania Ballet where she remained for 10 years, also teaching in the Rock School and at the University of the Arts. She has recently returned to Oregon after a three year teaching contract in the Bay Area. She will be teaching Variations/Adv. Pointe during the summer. Ms. Sundstrom has recently moved to Portland and committed to teach at Portland Dance Academy in Fall 2007. Lavinia Magliocco Lavinia Magliocco was professionally trained in classical ballet at North Carolina School of the Arts and School of American Ballet. Lavinia came to Pilates after a life-threatening illness in 1990; with the help of her teacher and mentor, Mona Williams, and physical therapist Jacqui Haas, she was able to return to performing as a classical ballet dancer at the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City at the age of 27 after a hiatus of 8 years. In 1998 she put aside performing to focus on teaching as a path of expression and exploration, though she was solicited to teach throughout her career by both students and mentors. Lavinia is a fully certified Pilates master teacher with over 17 years experience in the field, eight years as the owner of Equipoise, enlightened exercise in Portland, Oregon. She has also taught in Cincinnati at the School for Creative and Performing Arts as well as The Dance Hall Contemporary Dance Theatre; at Studio Maestro in New York City, Oregon Ballet Theatre School, Da Vinci School for Performing Arts in Portland, OR, and at other venues in the United States. She has published over 80 articles and reviews on dance for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Antenna Magazine, Pilates Forum, and Dance Magazine. Many of her students are now professional dancers at American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, August Ballet, Julliard, NYU, Tisch, and several students are working Pilates instructors, including Angela Kim of Pilate’s Edge and Studio Blue. Lavinia Magliocco holds a BA degree from University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts and Sciences.
Patrick Russell
Patrick Russell danced professionally for many years and he also the guest director with Vancouver Dance Theatre where he had set and choreographed Giselle, Coppelia, and The Nutcracker. Patrick teaches partnering as well as technique to a variety of age groups and still take class and perform as well. He was trained at Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle , Pacific Northwest Ballet, School of American Ballet , and performed with PNB, Los Angeles Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Ballet Theatre, Tulsa Ballet Theatre, Ballet Chicago, as well as guested in Japan and with many other groups.
Zach Carroll Zach Carroll danced as a soloist with Festival Ballet of Oklahoma, Oregon Ballet Theater and Ballet West. He currently is a guest artist with Bodyvox and Pacific Festival Ballet.
Diane Zink Melissa Framiglio Melissa Framiglio trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and danced with The Louiseville Ballet. She has currently been doing guest roles and has been certified in Pilates and Gyrotonic conditioning. Heather Unruh

Began formal Ballet training at the age of nine and at 14 was awarded scholarship to the School of American Ballet, official school of New York City Ballet. Ms. Smiley performed as principal dancer with Tulsa Ballet and Cincinnati Ballet to critical acclaim. She has appeared on the cover of Dancemagazine and was featured in Elle magazine. Alla was Prima Ballerina of Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, Russia during the 1980?s. She has been guest artist in many international companies and has been teaching the Vaganova method of ballet since moving to South California. She currently teaches for Debbie Allen & Fame Co. in Hollywood. Liuba Kozireva
Liuba danced with the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia. She danced solo roles with the Moscow Ballet in many international tours. Recently, she has been teaching in Texas and now is Ballet Mistress with Nevada Dance Theatre in Las Vegas. Sylvia Bolton
Was an original member of Portland Ballet Company and worked in New York at American Ballet Theatre. Later she danced with Minneapolis Dance Theatre and became Ballet Mistress. She currently resides and teaches in the Rogue River Valley. Carol Shults
Danced and worked with Mia Slavenska at the Fort Worth Ballet. She worked and taught with Pacific Ballet Theatre and Oregon Ballet Theatre. She acts a conservator & repiteur for choreography of the late Dennis Spaight. GUEST TEACHERS_______________________________________
